Neck pain is a very common complaint. As demands in office work increase, improper desk setup (ergonomics) and poor posture strain neck and back muscles and over time can develop irreversible conditions. Taking the right preventative measures as soon as pain is experienced can prevent you from requiring surgery in the long run.


There are two types of pain associated with neck pain; acute and chronic. Typically pain which does not last for more than six weeks is labeled as acute pain, while pain lasting over six weeks may be chronic. While pain may be constant or sporadic it is highly recommended to see a doctor for diagnostic studies such as x-rays and MRI to further identify any issues with the neck as soon as you feel discomfort.

Diagnostic Options for Neck Pain

Your range of motion and muscle strength will be measured including a detailed ortho-neuro exam. To gain further details into the source of your pain, additional diagnostic tests may be required:

  • X-ray
  • CT or MRI scan
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Computerized Range of Motion (ROM) and Muscle Test with the BioDex
  • Computerized Strength Test with the BioDex
  • Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) test
